The perks of wearing abayas

Recently I decided to only wear abayas. and it was such a liberating decision.

Being an impulsive buyer, I tend to waste money on buying clothes/shoes/bags I never wear. Now when I go to shopping malls and walk into clothing stores, I'd be like 'wow, I have nothing to buy!'

There's a lot of benefits of wearing abayas (or jubahs for that matter)

1. It's convenient - you don't have to waste time to think of what to wear it with. Just put it on and pick whatever hijab because black goes with anything.

2. Stress-free - You know sometimes when you wear a blouse with a skirt/jeans you're afraid your blouse might get stuck to the waist part of your skirt/jeans and it will show off your butt? (forgive my language) that never happens with an abaya :D (it's even perfectly fine if you're walking up the stairs and there's a guy behind you!)

3. Saves money (more like curbs your desire to buy clothing accessories lol) - I used to have several different bags and several different shoes to match my outfit. Now I only use one basic black bag and one pair of jelly flats. Life is so much simpler mashaaAllah ;p

4. It's comfortable - come on now, abayas are really comfortable. No need for further explanation.

5. It makes you look thin - It does. Trust me.

6. If you get married and get pregnant, you don't have to buy maternity clothes. (or nursing clothes because a lot of abayas have the button in the middle kinda thing)

7. You look ready for any occasion - Just got back from the supermarket? You realise there's a wedding you need to attend? No worries, abayas are suitable for every occasion.

8. You don't need telekung - Let's face it, we feel weird praying with jeans on or with a maxi dress that clinches at the waist right? With abayas you don't need no telekung :) (tp kena pakai handsocks and socks la)

9. You won't become a slave of fashion - You don't have to buy the latest peplum top or tribal motived top if you wear abayas. The main function of a piece of clothing is to cover you. Nothing less, nothing more. Fashion is an unnecessary thing that would make your love to this Dunia increase, that's not a good thing for the heart of muslim.

Fashion, although most people feel that it is okay, can be very harmful iman-wise because of the wordliness of it. How many girls long to own an LV bag, or even that high heel from forever 21 or even that cute hijab from an online shop? Is it necessary? Do we need it? We don't. If we have enough clothes to wear (more than 7 pieces, considering if it might take you a week to recycle your clothes, than we really don't need to buy more). Before I made this decision, I used to waste a lot of time looking at fashionable people or looking for inspiration from hollywood celebrities and all that. That is actually sad if you think of it, because our time is limited in this world and our aim is to seek for Allah's pleasure. Klu membazir2 masa mcm tu rasa mcm sgtlah rugi. (disclaimer : I still need to work on this area. I have yet not succeed in detaching myself from my worldly desires. But fear not! when there is Allah! there is a way!)

I just feel the need to promote abayas since a lot of people don't wear it on a regular basis (especially if you're not a student of UIA nor a citizen of bangi) I just want to add the amount of people wearing abayas so that it becomes common. Because sometimes when I go to places where people don't usually wear abayas people would look at me as if they're saying in their heads 'hmm.. I wonder where she just got back from?'

This is just an iklan. Just a friendly promotion ^^ kalau xnk it's perfectly fine. And no, it's not haraam to buy more clothes if you can afford it. But there's definitely a lot of bad consequences from it.

Because every muslim girl needs and LBD

  3. Hi sister! I just want to say that I´m sorry but I really don´t like abbayas, one of the things that I always admire in malasian people is that they don´t make a big deal about women wearing colours, while in other countries is obligated because they see it as fitnah; I noticed from you´re blog in general that you consider a lot of things that women do fitnah and i´m afraid that you will get to the point where you will start to advice girls to not go out from their houses so guys won´t look at them. That is dangerous. In Islam men and women cover up (in different ways) to reach equality and modesty in the society, what´s most important is what we have in our minds and hearts. You are reducing women reality to her clothes and men reality to desire and pleasure and that is just not fair.
I hope you post or at least read my comment, please know that I do not pretend to ofend you in any way, but because you´re blog is public, any one can read it and get (what I think) a wrong idea of Islam values.

    1. Assalamualaikum sister :)

Thanks for dropping your comment here. Yes I do agree with you :) But I was curious as to why you feel I am reducing women to clothes and men to desire and pleasure? Like you said, yes it is absolutely unfair and I am totally against such concept. May I know what are the words I used that made you feel that way? Thanks! <3

Oh and about abaya, it's not really about the color but more to other functions really. I absolutely love abayas well because of the reasons I've mentioned above ^^ It's totally fine if you don't feel the same way.

When you said that 'I noticed from you´re blog in general that you consider a lot of things that women do fitnah and i´m afraid that you will get to the point where you will start to advice girls to not go out from their houses so guys won´t look at them. ' I am guessing you were referring to my post in which I wrote about my opinion that vlogging is for muslimahs right? I've actually deleted that post because I was reconsidering my views on that :)

I think it is right for me to correct your understanding towards my view, sorry if the message you received seems to be that way. My audience is generally women, so I write about female related matter. I believe you understand the concept of amar maa'ruf nahi munkar and it's obligation right? I do think that the reality is a lot of things that MUSLIMS do are fitnahs upon them. But because I'm a girl, and I write for girls, I try to correct whatever it is I feel that my muslim sisters are doing that MIGHT be a fitnah upon them. If I'm a guy, then I would discourage/share about the things that might be a fitnah upon them.

And I do feel that both men and women should only go out of the house when necessary or with a purpose. Not for fun because muslims should do everything to please Allah. Certainly I would never start advising girls to stay in the house so that men wouldn't look at them. Astaghfirullah that concept is just wrong. If I were to advise people on something it would only be to seek Allah's pleasure. Not because of men or not because of women.

To me I thought I made it very clear in each of my post is that the most important thing is whatever we do we should do so to seek Allah's pleasure. Not because of men or anything like that :) So of course we would try our best in that. And I am sharing about abayas is just because I think a lot of muslimahs in my country are so engrossed in fashion it is starting to get worrying. Clearly succumbing yourself in fashion is not an effort to seek Allah's pleasure but to seek our own pleasure.

Again I'm really sorry if that's the message that you received upon reading my blog. InshaAllah I will try to improve on that sister. Thank you very much for your opinion. Please do leave your comments on my future posts. I'd love to hear them :)

  4. I want to start wearing abayas but I'm not quite sure as of yet! I wore hijab for the first time today and Alhamdullilah I can, without a doubt, say I felt amazing!
Now I want to start wearing abayas too but need a little (quite a lot of) motivation! Your list helped a lot!

  5. Hi,
I feel abaya actually does not cover your aura' (arabic one). A lots of men from my non-hijab times times told me they find women particularly hot in those lustrous abaya, a sort of lingerie gown for them. Some fantasized that we don't wear anything underneath and so on. Anyway when I started donning hijab, I opted for a big chador, the big rectangular piece of cloth which truly hides the body form unlike an abaya. I truly found chador to be the true form of Islamic hijab. I'm an Arab so over my long dresses, I wear chador which makes me feel closer to our masters Khadija (ra) and Fatima (ra) than wearing a sort of attraction getting abayas.

    My two cents.

  8. Salaam mashallah l absolutely loved your post, I think you are an amazing and inspirational women. We need more women like you to encourage our younger audience who see to think hijabs and abayas are fashion. We are not ment to attract the opposite so therefore we should not wear bright colours to attract people. Our companions wives wore black mostly who better to follow than them?
I myself wear a hijab but never wore abaya until now. I was never close to Allah as I was so engrossed in this dunya I didn't care. But since I started praying I can not even begin to tell you how great my life has become. Abaya is not just a veil it's a veil of the heart and soul. A veil of your eyes to lower ur gaze and a covering of your tonge

  14. Love love this post. From personal experience and as a recent abaya newbie I couldnt agree more with the above points. A tip for the ladies who are considering to wear one yet finding it difficult to take the step..in shaa Allah 1.make your intention. 2. Try it out ..for a day or two in a week (before you know it, you will be used to it. 3...and finally there is so much variety out there.if black isnt your thing, try colour or a cut that is more like a dress than the normal abayas. Hope this helps :)
